What is a One-to-One Conversation? What is it not?

A 1:1 conversation is a face to face meeting for the purpose of establishing or deepening a relationship. The conversations inquire into people’s deepest held beliefs, hopes, and concerns. You also want to hear about their story. At the same time, you are looking for people with the potential to be leaders and/or to become involved in the future life of the parish.

You do not just want to discuss their work, their actions, or even just what they think. Ultimately, you are asking people to talk about how they feel about what they do. You want to understand their passion or interest in being a member of the parish community. It is about getting to the roots of why people are members of the community. It is a sacred conversation.

A 1:1 conversation is not just one-sided. It is not simply an interview. If you wish to find out what makes someone tick, what their concerns and hopes are, you must be willing to reveal something about yourself as well.

A 1:1 conversation is not chitchat. It is focused on the person and their views, hopes, concerns, and aspirations for themselves, their family, and their parish.
